The watch back does unscrew but a special Rolex type spanner is required and I wouldn't suggest trying to get it off any other way it would likely be destroyed and it is no longer available so that would not be good ():-). This watch was likely worn with a leather strap when it was new and then replaced with an expandable metal bracelet as was popular in those days. If it was originally supplied with gold it probably just wore out and was more expensive to replace than your relatives thought it was worth. Likely by that time the bracelet to replace was much more than they had paid for the whole watch originally. If you get a powerful maginifying lens, even one of those hoods like you can get at the hardware store, and look between the lugs with the band off you may be able to just barely read 14k or 18k or 9k. It is, or was there at some time. It may have been worn away by the strap. The model number would also be there it is a 4 digit number and would be on the opposite side of the serial or case number. You may have to look in several lights and angles before you can see it but keep trying you may surprise yourself. I would suggest that you have the watch serviced by a qualified repairman, preferably a certified Rolex watchmaker if you intend to wear it. It has likely gone without service for sometime and the lubrications are stale and irrepairable wear is occurring. Though it is not the MOST collectible Rolex ever made it is certainly an extrememely nice piece that can be made to be completely serviceable by the right person. A nice item with family history with a practical application as well as intrinsic value. Anyone would be proud to wear it. One more note...Do NOT refinish the dial unless you find it absolutely necessary. Original dials add a great deal of value to a vintage piece.

Best regards,
T.
