Some general thoughts.... by Dish Date: 12/06/2001, 12:17:43 In response to: RE: Rolex Daytona -- hollandmj |
Hi Mike, I think the black dial model is slightly more sought after, but you should get the dial color you like. I don't see one dial being a "better investment" as compared with the other. I guess it is stating the obvious to say that eBay can be a tricky place to buy a watch, especially a highly sought after model like the steel Daytona. I have never purchased an expensive watch on eBay, but others do. Here are a few thoughts about how to protect yourself. 1. Only buy from a seller in the USA (assuming you're in the USA). 2. Only buy from a seller with very strong feedback, e.g. over 250 with very few if any negatives or neutrals. Read their feedback (at least the most recent 50). Try to buy from a seller who regularly sells watches - look at their other auctions. Don't rely on e-mailed references - these can be faked. 3. Avoid private auctions where bidder identities are hidden. 4. Make sure you see several clear pictures of the watch and anything that comes with it (box, papers, etc). (Note: pictures are no guarantee - see below). 5. Bid only on unused watches with original papers, boxes, etc. 6. Make sure you get an inspection period that's long enough for you to have someone check the watch out. (Again not a guarantee - see below). 7. Use an escrow service to make sure you get the watch (Still not a guarantee). 8. Pay the seller directly using a credit card (not PayPal) so you have the rights given by the card issuer to contest charges. (PayPal does not offer fraud protection. A scammer can use "borrowed" picures of a real watch in the auction, then send a fake watch. The fake can fool an escrow company. A scammer can also falsely promise a return period. You need to be able to stop payment if the watch does not check out). 9. Make sure you pay the correct person (the actual seller). Some scammers contact buyers via e-mail seconds after the auction ends and give bogus payment instructions, diverting the buyer's payment to them and not the real seller. 10. Have the watch checked by an expert immediately on receipt (i.e. within 24 hours, same day if possible). Best regards,
