Confused on Rolex "authenticity"

Ok..after reading rarebear's post on Rolex Authenticity, I'm a bit confused. I bought an Explorer II and see no crown etched at 6 o'clock. Also, can anyone tell me (I know this sounds dumb)if I should remove the plastic on the back of the watch covering the green circle (with the red stripe)?
