Dave;
Since there's no such thing as too much information, I'll throw in my 2 cents worth. My first Rolex was an Oysterdate. Although it's a manual wind movement, I didn't feel it was keeping time to Rolex standards after what I thought to be an acceptable breakin period. A very long story made very short - after 4 trips back to Rolex in Dallas, the watch kept worse time than it did before I sent it the first time. I finally gave up until I had to have a cracked crystal repaired and the watch serviced. Decided to do it locally (Monterey Peninsula)and when the watch was returned to me it kept significantly better time. I just stopped by the shop one day, remarked that it was still just a bit slow and while I waited it was further adjusted and now runs within 30 seconds a week fast. My current watch is a 5513 Sub. It needed servicing and a dial refinishing. Decided to try a watchmaker I found on the net, sent it off and crossed fingers. It took more than a bit of time due to the dial refinishing (I think just the service would be relatively quick)and when the watch came back, again I was not satisfied with it's accuracy. After a brief correspondence, I returned the watch for further adjustment at the watchmakers expense. It now keeps accurate time to less than +60 secs a month, enough to make even me grin, especially for a 1967 vintage watch. Email me if you'd like more details on either situation.
Just another take on the subject.
Good luck whichever road you take!
Chuck
