"Hamilton" was one of the fine American watch companies from back in the 1890's (1892, I believe). Like the other big American names, they were a victim of WW2 and tastes whcih changed dramatically after the war. The Swiss had whole ranges of new wristwatches to sell and the American companies which had been doing war work, had older models and were never able to catch up.

Hamilton went out of business in the 60's but was revived and is now owned by Swatch Group which owns other fine brands such as Omega and Blancpain. They have melded Swiss technology with American styling to produce some very fine, attractive and technically excellent watches.

So, to answer your question, Hamilton is an American company and at the same time, a Swiss company, blending both worlds together.
