Tritium question

Does anyone know why watches with tritium on the hands for the glow in the dark seem to only glow at times. For example I have an Omega Speedmaster Pro it has the hands that glow in the dark, last night it was on the night table, when I went to see what time it was the hands didnt glow, but sometimes it does glow, I found this to be the situation with the Tag Heuers also, anyone know why this is so?
