I am far from a "watch genious" but I'll share w/you what I've found over the past few years as a novice collecter. First there are alot of very cool and tasteful watches from the 1940's, 50's out there going for between $75-150. Some of the solid names like Gruen, Longines, Bulova, Elgin with gold filled or rolled gold cases, 17,18 jewels and MAINTAIN their value. Also, if you keep your eyes peeled, it shouldn't take long to find a vintage stainless steel Rolex with either a less than wonderful bracelet or none at all for only a few hundred, put a leather strap on it(maybe a Rolex buckle)and you've got a great start.
