Good Question... by Thomas Taylor (Registered User) Date: 03/06/2002, 22:29:22 In response to: RE: Rolex 5508 movement type -- Sandy Blaser |
Well...I saw it too! Now that dial, if we are talking about the same one, appears original...In James Dowling's book one is also shown and the text talks about the 1565 movement going in the 5508 in 1965. This watch by serial number indication is late 1964 so all seems okay here. It is very unusual and right at the end of 5508 production from what I can gather. The movement and dial likely go together. The dial is definitely from the no crown guard sub if my research is correct, because of the closed minute track. It is hard to tell if it is guilt print or not from the picture. Maybe not but The 5512 dials had an open minute track with the chronometer specification...5513 dials non-chronometer, had open minute tracks as well. Both came in guilt print as well as white. Closed minute track dials seem to go with the no crown guard subs...at least all the ones I have seen are that way. Rolex makes absolutely no sense in what they do from time to time especially back in the earlier days. But it is always interesting! Somebody else help out if you know anything. Best,
